Sr. Engineer, MA

Department: Design Engineering
Location: Westborough, MA

SUMMARY:

The Senior Engineer, in coordination with the Engineering Manager and the Field Services Manager, will support the activities of the Engineering Group. He or she will also be recognized as a leader and may be serve as project manager on engineering project and provide on-site technical support to Field Service personnel on a project by project basis. He or she willl be required to support emergency work all of which may include evenings, weekends and holidays. This position will report to the Engineering Manager.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform day-to-day office duties related to customer projects involving design, installation, testing, repair and upgrades of Power System facilities.

Perform power system analysis, short circuit studies, arc flash analysis, relay coordination studies on low, medium and high voltage industrial, commercial, and utility power systems. 
 

Interpret NERC, Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), and ISO NE requirements related to relay protection and control at Distribution, Transmission, and Generation facilities.

 Prepare interconnection documents for distributed generation systems connecting to area utilities including National Grid, NSTAR, Central Maine Power, Unitil, and Northeast Utilities

Develop one-line, three-line, and other drawings related to studies and design activities

 Develop specifications for procurement and installation of low, medium, and high voltage equipment including l switchgear, transformers, cable and terminations, capacitors and reactors, protection and control systems, metering and energy management systems, generators, generator excitation systems, and other substation equipment for new design, repair, and upgrade projects

Develop the design and layouts of electrical utilities, substations, metering, voltage conversions, and protective relaying systems.

Develop Settings and Associated data files for system protection devices

Participate in development of project scope documents and engineering costs in response to requests for proposals. Assist in the development and compilation proposals in conjunction with the Sales Group.

 Provide engineering expertise to the Field Services Group in support of customer job requirements.

Provide support in the field for commissioning and testing of apparatus and power systems.

Provide engineering review and analysis of final reports related to Testing & Maintenance and other customer projects.

Provide mentoring and technical support to junior staff members.

Provide project management and equipment/material procurement support on installation projects.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of seven (7) years experience or a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of five (5) years experience in electrical power systems design, analysis, and/or commissioning.

Professional Engineering license desirable.

Extensive knowledge of the electrical and power industry.

Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE/ANSI standards related to electrical power systems.

Knowledge of NERC, NPCC, and ISO standards and procedures desirable.

Demonstrated experience in the modeling of ac utility power systems using symmetrical components to perform short circuit and load flow calculations.

Demonstrated experience in the development of plans and specifications for procurement and installation electrical power systems equipment including transformers, medium and low voltage switchgear, medium and low voltage cable, conduit and raceway systems, underground duct banks, etc.

 Demonstrated experience in the application of protective relaying equipment, development of ac and dc protective relaying and control schematics, and the development and testing of settings on transmission, distribution, or generating plant ac power systems using single or multifunction utility protective relaying systems is desirable.

Demonstrated experience with basic and advanced metering systems and schemes to measure real and reactive power and energy on ac power systems with the ability to use advanced computing languages to develop customized schemes is desirable.

Demonstrated experience in Substation Automation, Data Acquisition, Metering, Hardware and Software and their application to power plant and industrial/commercial clients is desirable.

Organized, detail oriented, able to handle several medium to large projects concurrently, able to multi-task and handle tough situations

Ability to shift between planned and unplanned activities to support an organization committed to providing 24/7 emergency response to its customers.

Ability to solve technical problems as they arise and provide solutions to customers and field services staff.

Knowledge of AutoCad, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project.

Knowledge of SKM or other power systems analysis software, Matlab, protective relay settings software, and PLC and/or power system automation equipment configuration and programming desirable

GENERAL:

Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.

Must be available to work weekends, nights, and holidays as required

Agree to perform work outside the scheduled hours and be available for emergencies as deemed necessary.
